What actually drives the price of a website

1. Custom design versus a template. A template can be set up in a day. A custom design, planned around your customers and your goals, takes skilled time, and that is the biggest reason two "5-page websites" can differ by R40,000.

2. Functionality. Booking systems, online payments, quote calculators, client logins and integrations with tools like WhatsApp, Xero or courier APIs add development time. A brochure site with a contact form is the simplest build.

3. Content and copywriting. If you supply finished text and photos, the price stays lower. Professional conversion copywriting typically adds R650 to R1,500 per page.

4. SEO and performance. Proper page structure, schema markup, fast loading on mobile data and local SEO take extra care. Cheap sites often skip this, which is why they never show up on Google.

5. Who builds it. South African developers charge roughly R250 to R1,500 per hour. Freelancers sit at the lower end; established agencies bill R450 to R1,200 per hour, with Cape Town and Sandton typically higher.

Freelancer, agency or DIY: what do you get for the money?

DIY website builders (Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com) cost roughly R100 to R500 per month. Cheapest to start, but you pay forever, spend your own time building, and are limited in speed, SEO and features.

Freelancers usually charge R5,000 to R15,000 for a template-based site. Good value when you find a reliable one; the risk is availability and support after launch.

Agencies charge R15,000 to R80,000+ and bring strategy, design, development and support under one roof. The risk is paying for overheads and vague scopes.

We built Rainbow to sit in between: agency-level strategy and craft, with fixed, published prices from R5,900 and a direct line to the person building your site.

Hidden website costs to budget for

  • Domain name: about R100 to R250 per year for a .co.za.
  • Hosting and SSL: R50 to R500 per month depending on speed and support.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security, R450 to R5,000 per month on a care plan.
  • Payment gateway fees: PayFast, Yoco and Ozow charge a percentage per transaction.
  • WhatsApp Business API: Meta charges per message for business-initiated messages, billed in US dollars, plus a platform fee.
  • Premium plugins and licences: some themes, booking and SEO tools charge annual licences.

How much does a website cost per industry?

Industry matters because of functionality. A plumber or sole trader can win work with a focused one-page site. Salons, clinics and gyms usually need online booking. Restaurants benefit from WhatsApp ordering, and property and logistics companies often need listings or portals. See all our industry guides.

How to budget for your website

A useful rule of thumb is to invest 5 to 10 percent of the revenue you expect the website to influence in its first year. If one new client is worth R10,000 to you, a R12,900 website that brings in two extra clients has paid for itself.

Then compare quotes on three-year total cost, not just the build price: build fee, plus hosting, maintenance and third-party fees for 36 months. A cheap build with expensive monthly lock-in often costs more than a well-built site you own outright.
