Fast, mobile-first websites for South African networks.

Why loading speed on mobile data matters so much in South Africa, and exactly how we build websites that score 90+ on Google PageSpeed on 3G and 4G connections.

Quick answer

Mobile speed matters in South Africa because most people browse on their phones, pay for their own data and often deal with patchy 3G or 4G coverage. Slow pages waste data and patience, and Google considers page experience, including Core Web Vitals, in its ranking systems. We build mobile-first websites that target 90+ on Google PageSpeed Insights for mobile and load in under 2.5 seconds on 4G by keeping pages light: optimised images, minimal JavaScript, self-hosted fonts, caching and fast hosting.

Why mobile loading speed is critical in South Africa

  • Phones come first. For many South Africans the phone is the main, or only, way to go online. Google also indexes the mobile version of your site first.
  • Data costs money. Most people pay for their own data. A heavy page with autoplay video and oversized images literally costs your visitors money.
  • Networks vary. Coverage and speed change by area and time of day, so a site that feels fast on office fibre can crawl on 3G in a parking lot.
  • Older devices are common. Mid-range and older phones take far longer to process JavaScript than a new laptop.
  • Speed affects rankings and sales. Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint, good at 2.5 seconds or less), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint, good at 200 milliseconds or less) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift, good at 0.1 or less). Slow pages also lose visitors before they ever see your offer.

How do you score 90+ on Google PageSpeed on 3G and 4G?

Google PageSpeed Insights runs a Lighthouse test that simulates a mid-range phone on a throttled mobile connection. If your site scores 90+ in that test, visitors on real 4G get a fast experience, and 3G visitors still get a usable one. These are the things that make the difference:

  • Optimise every image. Use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, serve the right size for each screen, set width and height to stop layout jumps, and lazy-load images below the fold.
  • Skip the heavy hero. Autoplay videos and image sliders are among the biggest causes of slow mobile pages. One strong image or a lightweight animation does the job.
  • Ship less JavaScript. Heavy page builders and stacks of plugins add weight that older phones struggle to process. Defer non-essential scripts.
  • Limit third-party scripts. Chat widgets, tracking pixels, embedded maps and social feeds each add requests. Load them only when needed or on interaction.
  • Self-host a single font. One variable font file in WOFF2 format, preloaded, instead of several font files from a third-party server.
  • Keep CSS lean. Remove unused styles and keep what is needed for the first screen small.
  • Cache and compress. Enable gzip or Brotli compression and long cache lifetimes for versioned files, so repeat visits load almost instantly.
  • Choose fast hosting. A slow server delays everything. Pick hosting with a quick response time for South African visitors, or add a CDN.
  • Test like your customers. Check PageSpeed Insights for mobile, the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, and your site on a real mid-range phone on mobile data.

How this website is built

This site is hand-coded and server-rendered, with no page builder. It uses one self-hosted variable font, one stylesheet and one deferred script file, all compressed and cached, and it loads no third-party tracking scripts. Motion is purposeful and switches off for visitors who prefer reduced motion. You can test any page yourself on Google PageSpeed Insights.

Mobile-first design, not just mobile-friendly

Speed is only half of it. We design for thumbs first: large tap targets, a sticky action bar with WhatsApp and quote buttons, short forms and one-tap WhatsApp chats with a pre-filled message. The result is a site that loads fast on mobile data and makes it easy to contact you once it has loaded.

Is your current website slow?

Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. If the performance score is in the red or orange, or the Largest Contentful Paint is over 2.5 seconds, you are probably losing visitors. The usual culprits are oversized images, sliders, heavy themes and too many plugins or third-party scripts. We can rebuild your site on a lean foundation, from R5,900 for a one-page site or R12,900 for up to 6 pages, and our care plans include uptime and security monitoring after launch.

Why is mobile loading speed critical for websites in South Africa?

Most South Africans browse on phones using prepaid or contract mobile data, network quality varies, and many devices are mid-range or older. Slow pages cost visitors data and patience, and Google considers page experience, including Core Web Vitals, in its ranking systems.

How do I score 90+ on Google PageSpeed on 3G and 4G mobile networks?

Optimise and correctly size images, avoid autoplay video and sliders, ship minimal JavaScript, limit third-party scripts, self-host one WOFF2 font, keep CSS lean, enable compression and caching, and use fast hosting. Then test with PageSpeed Insights on mobile and on a real phone on mobile data.

What is a good Google PageSpeed score?

A score of 90 to 100 is rated good, 50 to 89 needs improvement and below 50 is poor. The Core Web Vitals behind the score matter most: Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less.

Does website speed affect Google rankings?

Yes, as one of many signals. Google's ranking systems consider page experience, including Core Web Vitals, but relevant, helpful content matters more. The bigger impact of speed is usually on conversions: fast pages keep visitors long enough to call, book or buy.

Is WordPress slow?

Not necessarily. WordPress can be fast when it is built lean, but heavy themes, page builders and many plugins often make it slow on mobile. We choose the right platform for your needs and keep the page weight low either way.

Can you speed up my existing website?

Often, yes. Sometimes a few fixes to images, scripts and caching are enough. If the site is built on a heavy theme or builder, a rebuild is usually faster and cheaper over time. Send us your URL on WhatsApp for an honest opinion.
